Seed Pack-it

The SixSeeds Partner Family: SixSeeds Families Everywhere!
The Cause: Giving kids in a Tijuana, Mexico necessary items for daily life.
The Organization: World Vision and SixSeeds

The Story:

SixSeeds Pack-it is our signature family service project!  Families join together to assemble and personalize the contents of a care package for someone in need.  In our first Seed Pack-it project in 2008, hundreds of

SixSeeds families filled boxes with over $250,000 in personal care items and gifts to soldiers serving in Iraq.  This year, we'll be filling backpacks for school children in Tijuana, Mexico with school and hygiene supplies.

Children in this impoverished city area just across the border lack the basic necessities for everyday life and school.  Over the past three years, SixSeeds has developed a special connection with this community through a family service pilot project developed with our partner, World Vision.  Together, we've provided much-needed assistance to the people of Tijuana in our visits to the community and with our partners on-the-ground in Tijuana. Join us in supporting the children of this community by signing up for our 2009 Seed Pack-it project team!

How it works...

SixSeeds does the behind-the-scenes work to identify a charitable partner in a specific region of the world, coordinates the logistics, and develops guidelines for the SeedPack-it contents.  We try to make the project “bite-sized” – enabling families to participate together in a small way, right at home, to help someone in need.  We believe these small seeds of effort and compassion by each participating family can indeed grow to benefit many in a meaningful way!

Through our partnerships with World Vision and Staples, we're able to provide the Seed Pack-it materials at a cost substantially below their $60 value.

Are you up to the challenge?

Idea for your own family:

Talking to your kids about why we’re sending backpacks to Tijuana.

Many schoolchildren in Tijuana, Mexico lack the basic necessities for everyday life. The Seed Pack-it project is a great opportunity to talk to your children about this particular area of the world and the issue of poverty. For example, you can share that Tijuana has many children growing up in squatter communities, having moved from even more dire situations further south, drawn by the promise of work near the American border.  Many of their homes, situated in the canyons, have no running water or electricity. Without electricity, refrigeration and cooking, let alone video games and TV are an impossibility.  Similarly, their schools are made out of extremely poor materials such as cardboard and plywood.  The have very few books and other school supplies we in the US expect to see in every classroom.  Yes, the differences in their lives from those growing up in the US are quite dramatic.  However, it's also notable that their similarities to our children are manyfold. The Mexican children are bright-eyed, love to learn and love to play.  The community also  makes great use of what little they do have.  Recycling isn't "in" because it's green, but because it helps with survival!

Packing and shipping a backpack is a wonderful way to help these kids and their families by providing  them school supplies and toiletries  - things we so often take for granted on our multiple trips to the local pharmacy or office supply store!
